Diverse Learning Needs

St Columbkille’s provides many programs to address and cater to the diverse learning needs of our students. These include:

Individual Learning Plans

At times students attract addition funding to support an identified learning need. These students have Individual Learning Plans developed for them in conjunction with their parents and at times specialist support teachers. Regular meetings are held with the parents and the classroom teacher to discuss the student's progress and future needs.

Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term intervention of one-to-one tutoring in reading and writing  for Year 1 students. The intervention supplements quality classroom teaching.
Individual students receive a half-hour lesson each school day for 12 to 20 weeks with a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher. As soon as students can meet grade-level expectations and demonstrate that they can continue to work independently in the classroom, their lessons are discontinued, and new students begin individual instruction. The length of time a child is on the program can vary. The program may also identify children who require long-term specialist assistance.

Students are also given the opportunity to code, creating simple games and programming characters within games to move in certin directions. 


(Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) Used to extend and support students thinking and problem solving skills.  STEM lessons are completed in Science and Technology lessons. 


Challenging Mathematical Tasks

All students K-6 complete Challenging Tasks in Mathematics.  These tasks are differentiated to suit the learners ability and supports the learner to solve various problems, which increase in difficulty.  

MSPEC Committee

MSPEC Committee is an internal committee where teachers meet, discuss and plan for the learning needs of students in their class who have learning needs or are considered to be at risk. The professional dialogue supports classroom teachers to ensure that the learning needs of all the students are being addressed.
